Abstract

In a post-COVID-19 world, working from home has become more common. Many offices and professions where it was previously not thought to be feasible to have people working from home, now have employees doing exactly that. With an increase in people working from home, there is also an increase in unused office space. Ålesund Kommune (Ålesund Municipality) requested a solution where users could mark their desk as available whenever they are out of office, so that these vacant desks can be utilized when needed. The goal for such an application is to increase space efficiency, which is both sustainable and economically advantageous. The problem can be solved by creating a desk and room booking solution, or more generally, an area booking solution. Such a solution would allow users to mark their desks as vacant in order to allow their coworkers or external actors to use their desks when it would otherwise not be in use. The resulting application allows for many different types of areas to be reserved by facilitating easy creation of new types of areas. It allows for areas to be assigned to employees, who may then mark their areas as vacant whenever they will not be using it. The solution further allows for regular booking of unowned areas such as meeting rooms. The application may be used as a prototype to inspect the feasibility of such a system if it were to be implemented in the workplace. With some additional modification, it may also be implemented as a fully functional solution if Ålesund Kommune so desires.
