Metode: Åtte autoriserte psykologer i Norge (4 menn, 4 kvinner, 30-69 år) deltok i semistrukturerte intervjuer. Background: As religious diversity in Norway increases, psychologists face rising demand on their cultural and religious competence, yet the topic is rarely addressed in Norwegian mental-health services. Research suggests that a religious gap between psychologists and patients may impede open dialogue and exploration, but empirical evidence remains limited. Objectives: This study explores how psychologists in Norway address and understand the role of religion in therapy. Method: Eight licensed psychologists in Norway (4 men, 4 women, aged 30-69) participated in semi-structured interviews. The data were interpreted through a reflexive thematic analysis grounded in interpretative phenomenology. Results: Five main themes were conducted: (1) Bridge-builders or strangers? Religion in the therapist-patient relationship, (2) Silence and taboo: Religion’s absence in the discipline of psychology, (3) Increasing diversity challenges religious competence, (4) Religion’s duality: between support and pain, and (5) The whole person in the therapy room: Religion as an integrated part of life. Conclusion: The findings show that psychologists in Norway acknowledge the need to approach patients’ religious beliefs openly and respectfully, yet feel limited due to insufficient competence and concerns about overstepping professional boundaries. They emphasize the need for enhanced religious competence in education, the development of clinical guidelines incorporating religion, and the improvement of interdisciplinary collaboration.
