Treneres bruk av transformasjonsledelse i idrett for utviklingshemmede

Abstract

Abstract Background: Physical activity and sports can contribute to improved quality of life and have preventive effects against a range of physical and mental health issues. Sports provide positive social environments, a sense of mastery, and developmental opportunities. However there are relatively few individuals with intellectual disabilities who participate in organized sports. The coaching role is complex and plays an important role in creating an inclusive and meaningful environment. The coach can make a big difference in the athlete’s experience. The research in coaching for athletes with intellectual disabilities is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how coaches of athletes with intellectual disabilities apply transformational leadership in their coaching practices. By exploring how coaches use the four dimensions of transformational leadership the key aspects of coaching will be highlighted. Method: The study is using qualitative method with semi-structured in depth-interviews. The study has a deductive approach, and the interview guide was based on transformational leadership. The study has a strategic sample, consisting of four experienced handball coaches working with athletes who have intellectual disabilities. The interviews were thematically analyzed and discussed with the theoretical framework. Results: The findings of the study shows that the coaches prioritize mastery, joy and good relations over performance. The dimensions come to an expression through the coaches acting as good role models, focusing on fair play and respect. Other central findings is that coaches emphasize to create an environment with mastery skills on every skill level. Conclusion: Transformational leadership is a central part of the coach’s practice. The findings in the study highlights how professional and interpersonal skills influence coaching in the context of sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Keywords: Intellectual disability, transformational leadership, coaching, qualitative interviews

Nøkkelord: Psykisk utviklingshemming, transformasjonsledelse, trenerrollen, kvalitative intervju
