Narsissisme og Problematisk Gambling: En Systematisk Litteraturstudie

Abstract

Background: Problem gambling is an increasing public health concern, characterized by persistent and maladaptive gambling behavior. Narcissism has increasingly been identified as a potential risk factor, and previous research has generally reported a higher prevalence of narcissistic traits among individuals with gambling problems. However, findings remain inconsistent. Purpose: The aim of this literature review was to examine whether narcissism is associated with problem gambling, and whether different degrees or subtypes of narcissistic traits may influence this relationship. Design and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted for quantitative studies using the databases Ovid, Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed. The search included the terms narcissistic personality disorder, narcissism, NPD, problem gambling, and gambling disorder. Following the selection process, seven studies were included in the review. Results: Five studies reported a positive association. Two studies found no or negative association, likely due to methodological and cultural differences. Conclusion: The findings suggest that narcissism, particularly vulnerable narcissism, is associated with problem gambling, although the relationship appears to be complex. Future research should utilize measurement tools that distinguish between different forms of narcissism to achieve more precise results. Studies should also explore how this association is influenced by gender and culture, as well as underlying mechanisms such as emotion regulation and self-image. Keywords: narcissism, problem gambling, personality disorders, vulnerable narcissism, grandiose narcissism
