Abstract

Interprofessional collaboration is essential to ensure that children and young people in vulnerable situations receive comprehensive and coordinated support. However, research and practical experience show that this collaboration is often characterized by significant challenges. The purpose of this bachelor thesis has been to examine which barriers hinder interprofessional collaboration in work with children, and which strategies may promote better cooperation. The study was conducted as a literature review, in which four peer-reviewed research articles are compared and analyzed in light of relevant theoretical perspectives. This thesis identifies three main areas as critical to the quality of interprofessional collaboration with child welfare services: communication, role clarity, and structural frameworks. Informants from the research articles highlight that lack of information flow and differing interpretations of confidentiality can lead to uncertainty, reduced trust, and ultimately may also undermine the child’s right to comprehensive support. Unclear roles and insufficient knowledge of each other's areas of responsibility were also identified as barriers, along with structural challenges such as limited capacity and incompatible digital systems. The discussion explores possible measures and strategies to strengthen collaboration, including a shared understanding of legal frameworks, regular dialogue between services, joint competence development, and the establishment of clear routines for cooperation. Such measures may help ensure that the child’s needs and rights are prioritized, in line with the principle of the best interests of the child. Overall, this thesis aims to highlight which barriers can hinder interprofessional collaboration in work with children, and which strategies may contribute to overcoming these challenges.
