Abstract

What happens when professionals encounter young people at their most vulnerable? And how can the relationship contribute to lasting change, so they avoid meeting again under similar conditions? This bachelor thesis explores how professional relationships can support young people's journey out of crime, influenced by perspectives within social work. It highlights a marginalized group in society, often caught between the stigma from their surroundings and their basic need for care, recognition, and belonging during a vulnerable phase of life. The thematic background emerges from society’s growing concern about youth crime, which gives this thesis a particular focus on relational work as a tool in transformative processes for young people undergoing criminal sanctions. The knowledge presented offers valuable insight for professionals working with youth in the correctional system, and the topic is examined through the academic field of social work. As a literature review, the thesis builds on selected research literature that highlights experiences from both youth and professionals within the correctional system. The findings are discussed through the lens of relevant theory, including perspectives on deviation, relationships, trust, empowerment, and acknowledgement, as well as desistance theory’s emphasis on changes concerning the individual's behavior, identity, and social belonging. The discussion demonstrates how professional relationships can make a substantial contribution to young people's transformative processes, especially when they feel seen, heard, valued, and trusted. Relational skills are presented as a vital, yet demanding competence, requiring both professional knowledge and personal dedication. It becomes evident how perspectives on professional relationships within social work form an essential foundation for fostering meaningful change with youth in the correctional system.
