The topic of this thesis is prevention of intimate partner violence against older women. The research question explored is: How can social workers at crisis centres contribute to the prevention of intimate partner violence against older women, and what role can regocnition play in this work? The purpose is to shed light on how social workers can empower older women exposed to violence by promoting recognition in preventive efforts, thereby reducing barriers to help. In accordance with the guidelines, this is a literature-based bachelor thesis. All data has been collected from existing research literature, academic books, and public documents. The theoretical framework applied is Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. The discussion highlights how older women may experience various forms of disrespect both in relation to the perpetrator and in encounters with support services. Social work’s mandate and core values in social work – such as compassion, justice and solidarity – are discussed in light of Honneth’s theory, levels of violence prevention, and existing barriers. The conclusion is that social workers at crisis centers can contribute to the prevention of intimate partner violence against older women through recognition, grounded in their mandate and values of compassion, justice, and solidarity. This can be realized through various levels of prevention and through measures and services offered at crisis centers. At the same time, social workers face several challenges that may limit opportunities for prevention and recognition. Older women subjected to violence, for their part, face barriers to accessing help and being seen.
