Through the politics of Norwegianization in the 1900s, the Norwegian state tried to assimilate the Romanisael/Norwegian Roma into mainstream society. "The Union for Opposing the Traveling Being" was founded in 1897 and was given the responsibility of leading the project. The politics were mainly based on separating children from their parents and the forced adaptation of a settled lifestyle. Svanviken Labor Colony in Eide in Nordmøre was established in order to teach the Romanisael/Norwegian Roma how to live a settled life. However, life at the labor colony was defined by the infringement of both personal and cultural freedoms. This thesis studies how Svanviken's rules and operation exercised control over the inhabitants in an early phase of the institution's history, as well as the ways in which the inhabitants of Svanviken showed resistance to this control.
