Ungdommers erfaring med diabetes type 1

Abstract

Abstract Background: In Norway, approximately 400 children and youths develop diabetes type 1 on a yearly basis. Diabetes type 1 is a disease which requires continual checks with frequent blood sugar measurements, and insulin administration to function normally in everyday life. The disease is often connected with increased stress for the person with the condition. The reasoning behind it varies, we therefore want to research how the nurse could play a part in increasing their life situation, based on youths’ experiences of life with diabetes type 1. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to describe the challenges faced by adolescents with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Based on this, we will discuss how nurses' educational strategies can support adolescents in managing the disease. Method: We use literary studies as a method in the assignment, we have analyzed data from four already existing research articles to answer our bachelor´s thesis. Results: The results showed that adolescents face challenges in adapting to their new life with the disease, highlighting the need for individual tailored learning for the youths and the nurses’ approach played a big role. As well as friends and family’s attitude were found to be highly relevant to youths’ ability for cope and practice self-care Conclusion: Our assignment concludes that educational strategies, individualized training, and facilitation of independence by the nurse can help adolescents manage the disease. Key terms: Diabetes type 1, Youths, Diabetes polyclinic, Nurse´s role, Self-Care, nursing measurements, Pedagogy, Mastery.
