Abstract

Background Pain is a symptom of cancer that affects the patient's quality of life and is the symptom that most bothers the cancer patient (Kongsgaard et al., 2014). The number of patients staying at home is increasing, which means that more cancer patients are receiving pain treatment at home (Helsedirektoratet, 2016, p. 16). Lack of knowledge and little interaction between nurse and patient reduce the possibility of adequate pain relief and can lead to a reduced quality of life for the patient. Purpose The purpose of the thesis is to shed light on the factors and experiences of both patients, relatives and nurses that influence how the patient experiences pain relief at home. Method An integrative literature review is the method used for the thesis, where four research articles are analysed. The results from the research articles, relevant background literature and own reflections form the basis for the answer. Results The results show that the patient and their relatives lack sufficient information, knowledge and training related to pain relief and generally about their cancer. There is also a lack of communication between patients, relatives and nurses. Furthermore, the results show the patient's knowledge of their own treatment and various factors that influence the patient's pain relief at home. Keywords Nurses, cancer patients, relatives, pain relief, assessment tools, disorders, knowledge, communication, psychological factors and hope as medicine.
