Abstract

Det generelle økende fokuset i samfunnet på en grønn energiomstilling be- lyser endringer som kreves i flere ulike bransjer. Internett står for en stadig økende del av verdens energibruk. De senere årene har det blitt en økt bevisst- het rundt rollen til programmering for å gjøre applikasjoner mer energieffek- tive. Denne oppgaven forsøker å bidra til økt forståelse av hvordan bevisste valg rundt kommunikasjonsteknologi kan redusere energibruken til webapplika- sjoner. Den undersøker energibruken til ulike webteknologier for sanntids- kommunikasjon i webapplikasjoner. Målet er å evaluere ressurs- og energi- bruken til Long Polling, WebSocket og WebRTC. Ved å utvikle en nettbasert tekstchat-applikasjon i tre versjoner som benytter de ulike kommunikasjonsteknologiene, måles energibruken i joule ved hjelp av Windows Energy Estimation Engine. Testene ble utført med ulike mel- dingsstørrelser og forskjellige antall meldinger sendt for de ulike testscena- riene. Resultatene viser at det ikke er en teknologi som er den grønneste i alle scenarier, men at valg av teknologi må tilpasses til det enkelte brukstilfel- le.
