Abstract

Title: Patients’ experiences with Norwegian psychomotor physiotherapy as treatment for anorexia nervosa Research question: Which experiences do patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) have with Norwegian psychomotor physiotherapy (NPMF) as treatment approach? Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, AMED and Web of Science databases from the 5th – 9th of October 2024. Three studies addressed patients’ experiences with NPMF as a treatment for AN. These studies were analyzed inspired by Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-stage process for thematic analysis, which generates main themes and associated sub-themes. Findings: The analysis of the studies resulted in the following main themes: (1) therapeutic relation, (2) bodily experiences, (3) self-esteem and emotional regulation, and (4) impact on everyday life. The therapeutic relation appeared to be the basis for personal development. Novel bodily experiences contributed to increased body awareness and facilitated a deeper understanding of one’s self. The patients experienced how body and mind interact with each other and build a functional entity. Greater self-acceptance and experience of intrinsic value contributed to increased self-esteem. NPMF treatment was perceived as useful and had a positive impact on everyday life. Conclusion: The results suggest that the NPMF treatment contributed to an improvement in symptoms and thus to an increased quality of life. This indicates that implementing NPMF in the treatment of AN would be appropriate. Further research is required to examine the effects of NPMF treatment for patients with AN in order to increase the representativeness and transferability of the results.

- 09. oktober 2024.
