Tilrettelegging for innsats i kroppsøvingsfaget

Abstract

The research question of this master’s thesis is defined as: “How can one facilitate student’s effort in physical education, even when they face adversity, challenges, and lack of progress in the subject?”. Effort is defined as “the student trying to solve academic challenges to the best of their ability without giving up, showing independence, challenging their own physical capacity, and cooperating with others” (Utdanningsdirektoratet, 2021, s. 2). The research question is particularly relevant as previous research has indicated that physical education does not always succeed in facilitating effort among different student groups. The purpose of the study is to investigate how to facilitate students’ effort. The theoretical part is rooted in a sociocultural theoretical framework inspired by Vygotsky, where the teacher plays a key role as a scaffolder in a sociocultural learning community. The thesis is a qualitative literature study, specifically a Scoping Review, as a methodological approach. A total of 14 peer-reviewed national and international articles focusing on learning communities, cooperation, and involvement in physical education are included. The study concludes that it is crucial to create inclusive learning environments that consider the students’ various experiences and needs. Varied activities and the utilization of the students’ different skills as learning resources are also highlighted. The teacher’s role is crucial in promoting involvement and engagement, which in turn can enhance student effort. Recognition of different types of effort, including reflection, cooperation, and independence, is important to promote effort among all students. The study shows that students often develop hiding techniques to avoid performance pressure and exposure of lack of skills. To reduce the need for such strategies, the teacher can create a safe learning environment that values effort over performance.
