Abstract

The use of environmentally friendly concrete mixtures in the construction industry is a pressing issue due to the sector's significant environmental impact. This thesis conducts practical tests and employs the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) model to compare CO2 emissions and mechanical properties between traditional concrete (reference concrete Anlegg FA) and two green concretes (Schwenk and VPI50). The traditional concrete used as a reference in this thesis is Heidelberg Materials Anleggssement FA. The first green concrete consists of a blend of 50% Schwenk Miljøsement and 50% Schwenk Lavvarmesement. The second green concrete, called VPI50, is a new type of cement not yet available on the market, composed of 50% clinker and 50% natural pozzolan from Iceland. The results show that Schwenk concrete achieves more than a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 9% increase in compressive strength compared to Anlegg FA concrete, meeting the strength class B55 requirement after 56 days of curing. Although the tensile splitting strength was slightly lower than expected, it remained within acceptable limits. A case study of a hypothetical parking garage in Stavanger illustrates that using Schwenk concrete can reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 51%, demonstrating how sustainable material choices in construction projects can help reduce the industry's environmental footprint. The thesis also highlights the potential for further environmental benefits using natural volcanic pozzolan as a substitute for fly ash, as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbonation processes. The thesis concludes that environmentally friendly concrete mixtures can meet both environmental and technical requirements in construction projects. Implementing these materials can lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions without compromising structural integrity.
