Summary In this master's thesis, we investigate how free play can contribute to early education in the Norwegian language subject to promote both social and academic skills among students. The background for this issue stems from discussions about the role of play in schools. There is ongoing debate that children need to play more in school, including free play. We wanted to look more concretely at how free play can be linked to the school's curriculum, thereby providing support for the idea that free play is an important arena for students in early education. To investigate this, we conducted a qualitative study. We observed a group of five third-grade students. We observed them once for 30 minutes. We were both present in the room and filmed the entire sequence with a video camera to ensure we had enough details. Our study provided us with insight into how free play contributes to the achievement of several competence goals and overarching goals in the curriculum. We gained insights into how free play initiates language processes by developing the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and oral communication. We also observed how free play contributes to initiating processes of personal development.
