Abstract

The theme of this thesis is queer aspects of Sami history. I am conducting an analysis of narrative patterns, how historical consciousness is expressed, and an analysis of the use of history of the content in the book Queering Sápmi. The purpose of this study is to identify connections between narrative patterns, historical consciousness, but primarily use of history, and to examine which parts of Sami history are highlighted in the stories of the queer Sami individuals. The research question for this master’s thesis is: What narrative patterns are found in the stories of queer Sami individuals in the book Queering Sápmi, how is Sami history portrayed in their stories, and how is historical consciousness expressed in the texts? The theoretical framework includes, among others, the narrative patterns by Teemu Ryymin and Jukka Nyyssönen, which consists of visibility narratives, assimilation narratives and agency narratives. In terms of both historical consciousness and use of history, I employ the theories of Håkon Rune Folkenborg, Jan Bjarne Bøe and Ketil Knutsen. The method I have used in this thesis can be classified as a qualitative critical content analysis. I analyse the content of the texts in Queering Sápmi, using the theoretical framework to conduct a three-part analysis. Finally, I discuss my findings, where I observe connections between the three different analyses. My findings reveal that the history of Sami assimilation, gender identity in Sami religion, women in Sami culture, and mining in Sápmi are highlighted in the stories of the queer Sami individuals. Moral and existential uses of history, in addition to the identify-forming use of history-function, are the most prominent forms of use of history evident in the texts. Among the three narrative patterns, visibility narratives are the most dominant in the content of the texts. My findings on historical consciousness show that queer Sami individuals express a more future-oriented view regarding queer aspects, while a more past-oriented view is expressed concerning Sami aspects.
