Abstract

Historical empathy recently explicitly became a very important part of the new 2020 curriculum. It is unclear in what way or what shape historical empathy has previously taken in Norwegian educational history. Through analyzing the upper secondary school curriculums and history textbooks that go along with the curriculums from the 1970s until 2020 I aim to trace how the concept entered into the Norwegian education system. While showing how the concept came to enter into British educational discussion and quickly having to retreat whilst seeing how or if any Norwegian educational scholars may have been inspired by such ideas, I will look for other external factors that may have affected the changes in Norwegian curriculums. Specifically, I will trace the political changes throughout the changes to upper secondary school curriculums to see if these factored into how we ended up with Historical empathy as a core element in the 2020 curriculum.
