Reimagining a Documentary Film Score through Music Technology

Abstract

This Master’s thesis deals with the Norwegian-language documentary film “Dragsug” from 2023, produced in collaboration with NTNU students of Film and Video Production. More specifically, it focuses on the music composed and produced to take part in it; the film score. At the end of the initial production period, in the film’s final version, large parts of the produced music ended up being discarded. The remaining role of music in the audiovisual whole could be perceived as modest. In light of this, the thesis examines how a film score can, through the use of music technology tools, take part in the film in a way that makes the emotional impact of the film’s storytelling stronger and more efficient. This is done by re-implementing, altering and adapting discarded musical drafts, based on relevant background material regarding both film and sound. On a subordinate level, the thesis examines how the film’s remaining sound design can facilitate the emotional amplification, and how changes in music and sound design can affect the way one listens to the film “Dragsug”.

Denne masteroppgaven tar utgangspunkt i dokumentarfilmen “Dragsug” fra 2023, produsert i samarbeid med NTNU-studenter innen film- og videoproduksjon – og musikken komponert og produsert i denne forbindelse; filmens partitur. Ved enden av produksjonsperioden, i filmens endelige versjon, endte store deler av den produserte musikken opp som forkastet. Den gjenværende musikkens rolle i den audiovisuelle helheten kunne oppfattes som beskjeden. I lys av dette undersøker oppgaven hvordan filmmusikken, gjennom bruk av musikkteknologiske verktøy, kan ta del i filmen på en måte som forsterker og effektiviserer den følelsesmessige virkningen av filmens historiefortelling. Dette gjøres ved gjenimplementering, endring og tilpassing av forkastede musikalske skisser, med bakgrunn i relevant bakgrunnsstoff angående både film og lyd. På et underordnet nivå undersøker oppgaven hvordan filmens resterende lyddesign kan legge til rette for musikkens emosjonelle forsterkning, og hvordan endringer i musikk og lyddesign kan påvirke måten man lytter til filmen “Dragsug”.
