Å undervise for handlingskompetanse i bærekraftig utvikling

Abstract

This master's thesis is titled To teach for action competence in sustainable development, and examines the concept of action competence in sustainable development, and how it is taught in school. The study utilizes qualitative interviews with five teachers who teach science at the intermediate level. The research investigates the teachers' relationship with the concept of action competence, the teaching methods they employ, and how they plan to incorporate assessment in this context. The findings indicate that action competence is a concept the teachers are not consciously aware of, but they all demonstrate a practical understanding of the concept by selecting goals and teaching methods that can contribute to action competence. The teachers employ practical teaching methods and with the use of socioscientific issues. With some few exceptions, it is challenging to determine precisely how the teaching methods are actually used. Regarding assessment, it is the formative assessment that is most emphasized by the teachers, in order to monitor students’ competence as they progress. It also appears that oral assessment in the form of dialogue and discussions is the most common methods. However, assessing action competence is difficult, as it is an ongoing process rather than a goal that can be achieved and mark as complete.
