Undervisning for bærekraftig utvikling

Abstract

The subject of this master thesis is sustainable development. With this study, I have explored the research question “How do teachers educate for sustainable development in middle school science?”. Sustainable development has gained more prominence in both society and schools in recent times. I have used various of theoretical perspectives and previous research to provide the historical background of sustainable development. Furthermore, attention is drawn to education for sustainable development, where theories of interdisciplinary teaching and teacher competencies are presented. Öhman and Östmans (2019) three teaching traditions for sustainable education are a central part of the theoretical framework of the thesis. To answer the research question, qualitative interviews were conducted with five middle school teachers from tree different schools. The data collection was carried out in collaboration with my fellow student Andrea Røssummoen (Røssummoen, 2024). The informants were asked about their understanding of education for sustainable development, the teaching methods they use, and how they use interdisciplinarity in education for sustainable development. The data were analyzed using Braun and Claskes (2006) framework for thematic analysis. Additionally, the teachers´ teaching methods were analyzed and categorized according to Öhman and Östmans (2019) teaching traditions. My findings? shows that the informants possess a wealth of knowledge about sustainable development, and how it can be taught. Many rely on a fact-based teaching tradition. The findings? also indicate that teachers teach interdisciplinary for sustainable development to a limited extend, which may be due to several factors.
