The ocean, covering approximately 70\% of the Earth's surface, remains largely unexplored with only 5\% thoroughly investigated. The primary challenge lies in the harsh and inaccessible underwater environment. Recently, the deployment of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) has become prevalent in assisting humans with underwater missions, including diving, inspecting underwater installations, and performing simple tasks using robotic arms. Effective operation of UUVs necessitates precise control, which depends on an accurate understanding of both the system and its environment. The ocean's unpredictability, influenced by factors such as wind, waves, and currents, complicates this control. Adaptive control has emerged as a promising method for managing UUVs in such variable conditions. This study explores the application of L1 adaptive control for a blueROV and theorizes its potential use in an Articulated Intervention Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AIAUV), although practical tests for the latter were not conducted. Additionally, the performance of L1 adaptive control is compared to the Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) method to evaluate its effectiveness in the underwater domain.
