This thesis examines how Kosovo has utilized its national football team as a tool for constructing national identity and fostering greater international recognition. Through an analysis of statements made by politicians, the football association, players, and coaches associated with the national team, this study provides insight into the processes leading to the establishment of Kosovo's national team. The establishment of the team necessitated efforts to recruit players and gain entry into international federations. In this context, the thesis investigates the attitudes of players towards representing Kosovo, particularly considering that many of them had previously represented other nations in football. Additionally, the thesis discusses the factors influencing players' decisions to switch to Kosovo's national team. In examining how Kosovo has politicized sports, the thesis investigates the statements made by Kosovar politicians regarding the emergence of sports and their outcomes within the context of the young nation's position. Furthermore, it delves into existing research on nationalism and sports nationalism to shed light on this subject. The thesis identifies clear indications that the utilization of sports and "soft politics" has been a deliberate strategy for Kosovo as a state. This thesis also finds that the players have supported this project. It aims to illustrate how and why sports have been employed to pursue international recognition, although Kosovo has yet to achieve full recognition as it remains excluded from international organizations such as the EU, UN, and NATO.

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan Kosovo har brukt fotballandslaget som et verktøy for å bygge nasjonal identitet og for å skape en større internasjonal anerkjennelse. Gjennom å undersøke uttalelser fra politikere, fotballforbundet, spillere og trenere gir denne avhandlingen et innblikk i hvilke prosesser som førte til opprettelsen av Kosovos landslag. Opprettelsen av landslaget krevde arbeid med å rekruttere spillere, og for å få innpass i internasjonale forbund. I denne sammenheng har oppgaven sett på hvordan spillerne stilte seg til det å representere Kosovo, ettersom mange av disse spillerne allerede hadde representert andre nasjoner i fotballsammenheng. Oppgaven drøfter også hva som utgjorde at noen av spillerne endte opp med å bytte over til Kosovos landslag.
