Hvorfor sluttet intensivsykepleierne?

Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study is to identify and describe factors that have influenced intensive care nurses' decision to terminate their employment. Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative method with an exploratory design. Semistructured focus group interviews have been conducted with intensive care nurses who has terminated their employment at an intensive care unit in the western region of Norway. Qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach has been applied throughout data analysis. Findings: The analysis resulted in one main theme and three subcategories, which described the informant’s experiences on why they chose to terminate their employment at the intensive care unit. The main theme Consequences of unpredictability and standardization is explained through the categories: 1. Influence on private life 2. Influence on work and 3. Influence on the individual. Conclusion: The study shows that intensive care nurses left the intensive care unit due to unpredictability, standardization, and a feeling of not being valued, seen and heard. When work compromises the intensive care nurse’s health and private life, as well as the opportunity to provide patients with good holistic care, the risk of turnover increases. By implementing non-economic measures such as life-adapted workplan, continuity in rotation, prioritization of professional development, establish primary leaders, and systematic debriefing, the risk of turnover can be reduced.
