Abstract

Abstract This master thesis explores how teacher, assistant, and parents experience flipped learning in physical education in primary school. Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach where students are introduced to new learning material at home, often through videos, before practicing what they have learned at school. Over a three-week period, flipped learning was implemented in two different second grade classes, where students engaged with instructional videos both at home with their parents and at school with their teacher and assistant. The study used a case design that included three videos focusing on throwing and catching. Following the intervention period, a teacher, an assistant, and two parents were interviewed through qualitative, semi-structured interviews. The analysis was conducted through content analysis, using flipped learning in physical education as the theoretical lens. The main findings from the study show that flipped learning in physical education increases student participation, especially among girls and students who are usually less active in physical education classes. The video lessons prepared and reassured the students. Parents had positive experiences gaining more insight into what their children learn in physical education, which led to increased engagement. They practiced the exercises at home with their children, which expanded both learning and activity levels. Flipped learning also strengthens the collaboration between school and home by giving parents better insight into physical education. Short and visual videos of 2-3 minutes make the videos more engaging and suitable for the attention span of second-grade students. Challenges related to flipped learning in physical education include difficulties in ensuring that all students watch the videos at home with their parents, as well as the time consumption associated with making the videos. Support from the school to facilitate video production during working hours could potentially ease the time-related challenge for teachers. The conclusion is that flipped learning in physical education is a promising pedagogical approach for lower grades in primary school, but further research is needed to generalize the findings from this study.

Sammendrag Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan lærer, miljøarbeider og foreldre opplever omvendt undervisning i kroppsøving i barneskolen. Omvendt undervisning er en pedagogisk tilnærming hvor elevene introduseres til nytt læringsmateriale hjemme, ofte gjennom videoer, før de praktiserer det de har lært på skolen. Over en periode på tre uker ble omvendt undervisning gjennomført i to ulike 2. klasser. Elevene så undervisningsvideoer hjemme med sine foreldre og deretter på skolen sammen med lærer og miljøarbeider. Studien benyttet et casedesign som inkluderte tre videoer som fokuserte på kast og mottak. Etter intervensjonsperioden ble lærer, miljøarbeider og to foreldre intervjuet gjennom kvalitative, semistrukturerte intervjuer. Analysen ble utført gjennom innholdsanalyse med omvendt undervisning i kroppsøving som teoretisk linse. Hovedfunnene fra studien viser at omvendt undervisning i kroppsøving øker elevenes deltakelse, spesielt blant jenter og elever som vanligvis er mindre delaktige i kroppsøvingstimene. Studien viste også at videoleksene forbereder elevene og gir dem følelse av trygghet. Foreldrene hadde positive opplevelser med å få mer innsikt i hva barna lærer i kroppsøving, noe som førte til økt engasjement. Videre viste studien at foreldrene praktiserte øvelsene hjemme sammen med barna, noe som utvidet både læringen og aktivitetsnivået. Omvendt undervisning styrker også samarbeidet mellom skole og hjem ved å gi foreldrene bedre innsikt i kroppsøvingsundervisningen. Studien viste videre at korte og visuelle videoer på 2-3 minutter gjør videoleksen engasjerende og tilpasset oppmerksomhetsspennet til elever i 2. klasse. Utfordringer knyttet til omvendt undervisning inkluderer vanskeligheter ved å sikre at alle elever ser videoene hjemme med foreldrene, samt tidsforbruket forbundet med å lage videoene. Støtte fra skolen for å tilrettelegge for videoproduksjon innenfor arbeidstiden kan potensielt lette på utfordringen knyttet til tid for læreren. Konklusjonen er at omvendt undervisning i kroppsøving er en lovende pedagogisk tilnærming for lavere skoletrinn, men ytterligere forskning er nødvendig for å generalisere funnene fra denne studien.
