Omvendt undervisning og helse i kroppsøving

Abstract

The aim of the physical education subject is to promote health and strengthen students' health resources. Therefore, the concept of health is a central component of the physical education curriculum. However, research shows that students have a narrow understanding of what health is. Additionally, teachers are unsure how to teach students about health and are reluctant to use physical education class time for theoretical instruction. In recent years, there has been increasing research on flipped learning, with some researchers suggesting it could be the solution to teaching students about health in physical education. The purpose of this study is to explore how secondary school students perceive flipped learning and whether it can contribute to a better and deeper understanding of health. A qualitative method was used, with focus group interviews for data collection. The sample consisted of 13 students from the 9th grade, divided into 3 focus groups with 4-5 students each. The method used for analyzing the data was content analysis. The findings show that students were generally positive about flipped learning, and the interviews suggest that flipped learning also increases student motivation. Additionally, flipped learning can contribute to increased learning in physical education. Students do not want theoretical instruction in the subject but want to understand why they do what they do and the benefits it can bring. The results indicate that they are positive about learning more about health through flipped learning. The findings also show that some students focus heavily on the physical dimension and diet when it comes to what health is. However, it seems that several students have changed their view on health and recognize the importance of especially the social dimension of health.
