Summary Background: Emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) have an important societal mission of receiving and evaluating medical emergency calls. There is limited knowledge regarding the daily work of newly hired EMD´s. Purpose: The purpose of this Master's thesis was to investigate and describe newly employed EMDs’ experience of their own working day and collegial support. Method: The Master's thesis is a qualitative study with an exploratory and descriptive design. Seven semistructured interviews were conducted to generate new knowledge and an in-depth understanding of the daily work of new employees. To analyze the data we used systematic text condensation (STC), developed by Kirsti Malterud. The theoretical perspective was related to moral distress, the job-demand- resource model and colleague support. Results: A work environment characterized by noise and disturbance is emphasized by the newly employed as the most burdensome factor. This contained short response deadlines, noise, unrest, high pace, fear of making mistakes and fear of supervisory matters. The lack of time to recover between tasks was emphasized as challenging by the informants. The informants used various coping strategies for dealing with their day-to-day work. Moral distress was a recurring theme in relation to what the newly employed experienced at work, and how they described their own reaction pattern. Conclusion: The knowledge of new employees’ experiences is important in order to facilitate measures to reduce physical and psychological discomfort. Facilitation of collegial support conversations and an increased focus on moral distress can be useful for dealing with a work situation that can at times be morally challenging. Informantene beskrev ulike mestringsstrategier for å håndtere arbeidshverdagen.
