Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how children with incarcerated parents experience stigma, with a focus on identifying measures to reduce the stigma they face. The research question is explored through a literature review, based on existing expertise in the field. The study utilizes Ervin Goffmans (1975) theory of stigma as a framework for understanding the challenges faced by children of incarcerated parents. The main findings from the literature and research reports highlight that children experience significant challenges related to stigma and social exclusion. The knowledge that employees in the health and welfare sector have about the target group and their need is crucial for the childs experience of stigma. Preventive measures such as knowledge sharing across professional groups, training initiatives, and inclusion in social communities can contribute to reducing stigma and improving the situation for the children. It is necessary to consider the child in the context of society when implementing measures. These measures can contribute to increased knowledge, openness, and understanding. It presupposes the action plans are developed at a societal level to ensure that the measures are implemented effectively.
