Tare – en naturlig kilde til jod

Abstract

Large parts of the Norwegian population suffer from iodine deficiency, which can lead to various health problems including inflammation of the thyroid gland, goiter, and metabolic changes. It is especially crucial that young people, nursing mothers, and pregnant women consume adequate amounts of iodine. Investing in the cultivation of Norwegian kelp could offer a potential solution to this issue. Kelp is an underutilized resource with great potential across various markets, including health, energy, and human consumption. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether kelp (Laminariales) could be introduced into the Norwegian diet to reduce the increasing iodine deficiency among young adults. The study is based on a market survey that assesses knowledge and mindsets towards the use of kelp among young adults aged 20 to 35 in Norway. In addition, interviews with Randi Tomren-Godø from the seaweed producer Nordi AS were conducted to include industry perspectives. Results from the studies indicate a lack of knowledge about both nutrition and seaweed. However, the results show that the majority of the target group is open to including kelp as a component in their diet. The lack of knowledge is one of the challenges hampering the developing of the industry. In order for kelp to serve as a sufficient source of iodine, engagement from multiple stakeholders is required. Clear regulations need to be established for the entire value chain, actors need to be willing to invest, and a stable and secure market needs to be established. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities regarding government regulations, sustainability, and potential entry into the Norwegian market will also be discussed. This leads to a discussion on whether it is reasonable to consider kelp as a contribution to reducing iodine deficiency among young adults in Norway.
