The Education Act (1998) requires principals to keep themselves updated on the day-to-day activities and work to further develop them. The most important part of the business is teaching, and in this qualitative survey I have looked at how the principal works in the day-to-day operational operations to further develop this, at 5 of the municipality's 6 secondary schools. It also involves examining how they keep up to date with the activities at their school. The core curriculum - values and principles for primary and secondary education - (Directorate of Education, 2017) also states that the school's professional community must assess and further develop its practice and that this presupposes good management. The findings show that the principals' impact on teaching is mainly indirect, including through management of the introduction of new curricula, new projects, formal and informal meetings. This is in line with much of the other research in this area. The principals in my survey conduct some teaching, either scheduled or as a substitute, but do not systematically participate in observing or supervising teaching. The survey uses document analysis and interviews as methods, and was carried out in the autumn of 2023.
Opplæringsloven (1998) krever at rektorene skal holde seg fortrolige med den daglige virksomheten og arbeide for å videreutvikle den. Den viktigste delen av virksomheten er undervisning, og i denne kvalitative undersøkelsen har jeg sett på hvordan rektor arbeider i den daglige operasjonelle driften for å videreutvikle denne, ved 5 av kommunens 6 ungdomsskoler. Det innebærer også å undersøke hvordan de holder seg oppdatert på virksomheten ved deres skole. Læreplanens overordnede del (Utdanningsdirektoratet, 2017) sier også at skolens profesjonsfaglige fellesskap skal vurdere og videreutvikle sin praksis og at dette forutsetter god ledelse. Funnene viser at rektorenes innvirkning på undervisning i hovedsak er indirekte, blant annet gjennom ledelse av innføring av nye læreplaner, nye prosjekter, formelle og uformelle møter. Dette er i tråd med mye av annen forskning på dette området. Rektorene i min undersøkelse har noe undervisning, enten timeplanlagt eller som vikar, men deltar ikke systematisk med observasjon eller veiledning av undervisning. Undersøkelsen bruker dokumentanalyse og intervju som metoder, og er utført høsten 2023.
