Abstract

Title: People on long-term sick leave experiences during participation in an in-patient occupational rehabilitation program - A qualitative study Background: Getting people back to work has become increasingly important, especially in view of the increasing challenges associated with long-term sick leave and musculoskeletal disorders. Research shows that work is health-promoting, and that the risk of poorer health increases by not being at work. Long-term sickness absence is not exclusively due to medical reasons, so it need be seen in a holistic perspective. It is therefore important to understand what is important during such a process from the long-term sick leave person's perspective. Aim: The aim of this study is to gain insight into the subjective experiences of patients on long-term sick leave who are on an in-patient occupational rehabilitation program. Method: This study used a qualitative research approach. The sample in this study consisted of ten people, five women and five men aged 33-64. Semi-structured interviews were used as a method for data collection. The data was analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) principles for thematic analysis. Results: It was important for the informants to be active in their own rehabilitation process, this promoted self-efficacy and motivation - which led to increased belief in themselves. The informants highlighted being seen, heard, and taken seriously by the employees - this contributed to a supportive and trusting relationship with the employees. The findings also show that there was an inclusive environment among the patients, where this led to promote a sense of security and a supportive community. Conclusion: Good relationships are important in such a rehabilitation process. Feeling heard, seen, and taken seriously appear as essential elements. There are indications the rehabilitation process must be regarded as a holistic experience. Keywords: Occupational rehabilitation, long-term sick leave, return to work and musculoskeletal disorders
