Aim: Violence and aggression is a common problem in mental health care. The aim of this study is to examine how nurses can work to prevent aggression and violence in mental health care for adults. Method: A literature review based on seven research articles. Result: The findings illustrate two main themes critical in the work of preventing aggression and violence; (1) nurses’ knowledge and ability to understand the patient, and (2) organizational factors, with five and three sub themes respectively. Conclusion: Nurses need increased competence in the work with patients prone to aggression and violence. Their knowledge needs to be strengthened, and their ability to approach, care for and communicate with a patient needs to be in order. Organizational factors like education and practice, a safe working group and adequate staffing is also recognized as important in the work of preventing aggression and violence.
