Foreldres erfaringer av å ha kritisk sykt barn i intensivavdeling

Abstract

Abstract Background: Intensive care nurses have a responsibility which include showing care and respect, and to take care of the patients next of kin. As an intensive care nurse, we will meet critically ill children of different ages, and their parents as next of kin. Parents are a security for their child and can also contribute with knowledge about the child's symptoms and treatment. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to illuminate how parents to acute critically ill children felt taken care of, when the child was admitted at an intensive care unit. Aim: The aim was to get a deeper insight in which factors contribute to the parents' experience of care. The hope is that our findings can help to focus on meetings with parents as next of kin, and to uncover any areas for improvement. Method: The study had a qualitative approach, and five individual interviews were conducted. The analysis work was inspired by Graneheim and Lundmand ́s qualitative content analysis. Result: All parents felt well looked after, even if some experienced certain challenging situations. Factors that contributed to the care of the parents were continuous and honest information, and that plenty of time was set aside for it. Caring, generous and warm intensive care nurses contributed to positive experiences for the parents. Inclusion of siblings and the rest of the family, as well as arrangements for the parents to be close to the child, were also important. Some of the parents appreciated being able to participate in the child's care. Conclusion: Intensive care nurses play a big role in how parents experienced being cared for. We found that the parents felt well looked after, despite different experiences. An area of improvement that was uncovered was the parents' access to practical information.
