Innovasjon i renovasjonbransjen

Innovasjon i renovasjonbransjen

Abstract

The focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals has increased considerably in the past years. At the same time, solutions are sought to help achieve these goals. It is not only industries and organizations that should work to achieve the goals the consumers must also be involved. One industry that is related to both sustainability and consumers is the waste management industry. Waste and waste sorting is something we deal with every day. Norwegians have potential to improve the amount of waste who gets sorted and reducing the total amount of waste. The waste management company GLØR in collaboration with the IT company Carrot has introduced an innovation that can help solve the challenge of sorting out and reducing the amount of waste. The innovation is a pay-as-you-throw solution. This innovation involves registering which fractions and the amount of waste each household throws away. In this way, data on the sorting habits of consumers is recorded. In this thesis, the innovation will be explored further, and the research question is: How can understanding and knowledge of residents' behaviour contribute to the innovation process of a waste management company? Attempts have been made to elucidate the problem through qualitative methods. Interviews have been conducted with residents of the apartment complex, the waste management company GLØR and the IT company Carrot to gain knowledge, views and experiences about the innovation process. Relevant theories such as sustainable consumer behaviour and innovation processes were reviewed and elucidated in order to put the research into a theoretical framework. There are several key findings that have emerged from the research. The sample from the residents found several of the practical elements surrounding the pilot project to be unproblematic. It appears that the sample believes that they sort according to the sorting rules that exist, even though the facts say otherwise. Through drivers for sustainable consumer behaviour, we explore why the informants recycle. Habits and social desirability are central facors. Understanding the innovation, and that the innovation is better than what it is supposed to replace are also factors that can affect the spread of the innovation.
