Lærerrollen i omvendt undervisning: Ungdomsskolelæreres erfaringer i matematikk

Abstract

This master’s thesis investigates middle school teachers’ experiences with flipped classroom instruction in mathematics. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of how teachers experience their role in planning and implementing flipped classroom instruction, as well as changes and challenges. The study also goes deeper into the significance of sufficient preparation for the flipped classroom approach. The theoretical part presents the concept of flipped classroom instruction and other relevant research, which will be grounded in the results in the discussion part. The method used is qualitative research interviews with four mathematics teachers who have experience with flipped classroom instruction. The interviews were analyzed using grounded theory analysis tools to uncover the teachers’ most prominent experiences and perspectives. The results of this study are based on the teachers’ experiences and indicate that the informants perceived flipped classroom instruction as providing more time for individual student guidance. The research participants agree on the importance of conducting through preparations prior to such instructional sessions and motivating students to complete the preparations, to ensure that the teaching plan does not collapse. If both teachers and students complete the necessary preparations, it is possible for the teachers to reduce the use of traditional board-based instruction in the classroom, thereby freeing up more time for individual guidance. Another finding of the study pertained to the changes and challenges associated with the teacher’s role. All research participants encountered various challenges, such as incomplete preparations among students and how to handle technical complications. However, the research participants did not perceive the transition from traditional to flipped classroom instruction as a significant challenge. Several research participants appeared comfortable with the flipped classroom approach and recognized significant benefits of the method. At the same time, some participants expressed criticism towards certain aspects of the teaching format and the teacher’s role. Several research participants were skeptical about replacing the teacher with a screen-based video at lower grade levels and felt a reduced sense of control when implementing the flipped classroom approach.
