Relasjonsbygging i psykisk helsearbeid

Abstract

Aim: Examine the nurse's experience of what affects the relationships with patients suffering from severe mental illness admitted to a closed psychiatric ward. Method: Systematic literature study based on seven qualitative peer-reviewed research articles. Result: From the included research articles, the findings were divided into three main categories that can affect the relationship between nurse and patient; «Nurses attitude, feelings and understanding», «Nurses knowledge and skills» and «Organizational conditions». Conclusion: Meeting patients with severe mental disorders, the relationship can be influenced based on what preconceptions the nurse has and what the nurse's attitudes are towards seeing the patient as a person versus a diagnosis. What knowledge and experience the nurse brings is also essential, as fear and the ability to regulate oneself are factors that can affect the relationship between patient and nurse. Keywords: Relationship, severe mental illness, communication and nurse.
