Abstract

I romanen Tiempos recios tar Mario Vargas Llosa for seg det avgjørende statskuppet i 1954 i Guatemala, som ble utført av CIA og som styrtet den demokratiske og reformistiske regjeringen til Jacobo Árbenz, med den påståtte intensjon om å hindre kommunismens inntog på kontinentet. Formålet med denne oppgaven er å analysere ideene som Vargas Llosa postulerer om den militære intervensjonen som en kontraproduktiv handling, som resulterte i diktatur og vold, forsinkelsen av kontinentets demokratisering og radikaliseringen av Latin-Amerikas venstreside. Analysen viser kritikken som i hovedsak er rettet mot USA på grunn av deres feilslåtte politikk, men også mot rollen United Fruit Company spilte i kuppet gjennom sin propaganda og manipulasjon. I tillegg fremheves det hvordan den kalde krigens omstendigheter og USAs utenrikspolitikk ironisk nok undergravde demokratisering og utvikling, og bidro til den politiske polariseringen. Det undersøkes hvordan den politiske dynamikken i andre halvdel av 1900-tallet i Latin Amerika var preget av den kalde krigens politiske spenninger og det nordamerikanske hegemoniet, og hvordan hovedutfordringene mange latinamerikanske land sto ovenfor var å oppnå politisk, økonomisk og sosial utvikling og modernisering.
