Abstract

Child abuse is a serious public health problem. Every year, millions of children across the world are subjected to abuse by their caregivers. The consequences of such abuse can be huge for the ones affected – and by extension the society in general. The aim of this study has been to investigate the relationship between child abuse and mental health problems, and whether friendships can have an impact on this association. The data used in this research is from the cross-sectional study “Young in Oslo 2021”, and the analytical sample consists of 13939 adolescents, aged 13-19 years. The results show that the youth who have experienced violence at home report an elevated level of mental health problems compared to the non- abused youth. Furthermore, a part of the association between violence at home and mental health problems goes through friendships. In other words, having experienced violence at home affects one’s relationships with peers, and poorer friendships in turn can lead to an elevated level of mental health problems. However, having poorer friendships does not affect the mental health of those abused more than the other adolescents. Having said that, problems in peer relationships can be a consequence of having experienced parental violence. Therefore, it is important to highlight this aspect of the abused children’s lives.
