Graffiti gir mening

Abstract

This master's thesis examines how students can express their own opinions through graffiti. The background for the thesis is the interdisciplinary theme of democracy and citizenship that applies in LK20 and what it means for the arts and crafts subject. In LK20, this is described by: The students will be challenged to critically reflect on art and design and give expression to their own experiences, opinions and thoughts. Work with visual expressions and encounters with art and culture can give students the ability to participate, interpret and change the society they take part in. Within this framework, a teaching plan has been prepared in the form of a workshop that is conducted in 7th grade. At the workshop, the students have been given an introduction to what graffiti is and the work of expressing their own opinions through graffiti in the form of spray paint for freehand, i.e. without the use of a stencil / stencil. The survey is designed as case studies where the main emphasis is on the workshop that constitutes one case. The second case consists of my own creative work where I also work with expressing my own opinions through graffiti. The results from the survey show how the students unsolicitedly use their youth culture as a resource when they create modalities that, seen in connection with each other, create meaning, their meaning. The students largely use English text, elements from digital media, as well as iconic visual modalities that are similar to what they are to represent. The opinions that are expressed are in line with the curriculum's values, which may be a possible consequence of how the students experience the context and the limitations of the school setting. Spray painting has proven to be an easy technique to master, and graffiti has proven to be an engaging theme that can offer exciting and important discussions in the classroom.
