Miljøhemming – en blindsone i helsefremmende arbeid

Miljøhemming – en blindsone i helsefremmende arbeid

Abstract

This dissertation represents a master's degree in health promotion, an emerging interdisciplinary field of study (Bunton & Macdonald, 2002, p. 19). The project rests on an independent empirical-theoretical study with a sociological focus. It consists of a scientific article followed by a “cover”. The article, Environmental disability – a languageless diffuse stigma, is written for the Norwegian Sociological Journal. Disability studies are the academic starting point for the article. The cover expands on the research process and possible implications of the study's research findings. The research examines how the Norwegian National Institute of Public Health (FHI) discusses and disseminates knowledge about environmental disability. Environmental disability is understood as the phenomenon that occurs when everyday chemicals, perfumes, and fragrant products cause such disabling health problems that large parts of society become inaccessible. The empirical data consist of text extracted from FHI's document on professionally recommended norms for the indoor environment (FHI, 2015, p. 20). The scientific method used is critical discourse analysis, as described by Fairclough (2010). The findings show that FHI mystifies, psychologizes, and stigmatizes the environmentally disabled through its knowledge regime. Thus, contributes to invisibility and social isolation.
