Denne avhandlingen undersøker hvordan Tyrkias nåværende president Recep Tayyip Erdogan prøver å påvirke minnekulturen i dagens Tyrkia, med utgangspunkt i teori fra fagtradisjonen knyttet til minneteori. Problemstillingen i oppgaven lyder som følger: «Hvordan kommer den tyrkiske minnekulturen til uttrykk på Recep Tayyip Erdogans offisielle presidentnettside?». Ved siden av problemstillingen er det stilt to forskningsspørsmål som vil være utgangspunkt for drøftingskapittelet i oppgaven. Den første av disse ser på hvilke minner som kommer til uttrykk ut av den utvalgte empirien, mens den andre prøver å svare på hvordan diskursen i empirien kan ses på som et forsøk på å påvirke den tyrkiske minnekulturen. Oppgavens empiri er 14 taler som er hentet fra Tyrkias offisielle presidentnettside, og disse talene er holdt av Erdogan på forskjellige minnedager- og feiringer. Datamaterialet er analysert ved å bruke diskursanalyse som James Paul Gee redegjør for. Gees syv «building tasks» er brukt for å lage analysekriterier til analysen. Oppgavens analyse er tett oppkoblet til hermeneutisk metode, hvor det vil være et stort fokus på å tolke mening i de utvalgte tekstene og bruke disse tolkningene i samspill med oppgavens teorigrunnlag. Funnene i analysen viser hvordan Erdogan bruker flere former for minner på ulik måte til å påvirke dagens tyrkiske minnekultur. Analysen peker samtidig på flere funn som er knyttet til Erdogans forståelse av identitet, ideologi og historie som gjenspeiles i den minnekulturen han ønsker å skape. Drøftingskapittelet bruker funnene i analysekapittelet til å presentere og drøfte hvordan Erdogan opererer med flere «minnesirkler» i sitt forsøk på påvirke den tyrkiske minnekulturen gjennom sin forståelse av tyrkisk historie, identitet og samfunn. Avhandlingen tilføyer en forståelse av hvordan Erdogan har en alternativ forståelse av minner og minnekultur i forhold til det som har vært normalen i Tyrkia over de siste 90 årene.

This dissertation examines how Turkey’s present president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is trying to affect the Turkish memory culture, based on the academic field of memory studies. The main research question of the thesis is: “How does the Turkish memory culture come to expression on Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s presidential web page?” In addition to the main thesis question there are two other research questions which is the basing point for the discussion chapter. The first, examines what kind of memories that are expressed in the chosen empirical data. The second, examines how the discourse in the empirical data can be seen as an attempt of affecting the Turkish memory culture. The empirical data consists of fourteen speeches held by President Erdogan on different occasions, like memorial days and anniversaries. The data has been analyzed using discourse analysis as described by James Paul Gee. Gee’s “building tasks” have been used to make analysis criterions for the analysis. The analysis of the dissertation is based on hermeneutical method and focuses on interpretation of the data and a further interpretation of the data in interaction with the theoretical background. The findings of the analysis show how Erdogan uses different forms of memory in different ways to affect the Turkish memory culture. The findings of the analysis also point to Erdogans understanding of history, identity and ideology which reflects upon the memory culture he desires to create. The discussion chapter uses the findings in the analysis to present and discuss how Erdogan operates with several “circles of memory” in his attempt to affect the Turkish memory culture through his understandings of Turkish history, identity, and society. The dissertation adds an understanding of how Erdogan has an alternative understanding of memories and memory culture in contrast to the Turkish normality.
