Eskatologisk temporalitet i Justin Cronins The Passage

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven analyserer temporalitet tematisk og formelt i Justin Cronins The Passage. Romanen omhandler en apokalypse og den post-apokalyptiske verden som oppstår deretter, og har en tredelt tidsstruktur. Historien starter kort tid før apokalypsen før den hopper 100 år frem i tid. Samtidig er det en rekke henvisninger til en ukjent fremtid med teksten: “Presented at the Third Global Conference on the North American Quarantine Period”. Oppgavens problemstilling angår dette tredelte temporale uttrykket og diskuterer det i lys av sjangerkarakteristikker og litterære virkemidler. Den gjennomgår sjangrene apokalypsefiksjon og gotikk som legger grunnlaget for Cronins vampyrapokalypse, og drøfter hvorvidt verket samsvarer med sjangertroper. Videre blir temporalitet spesifikt analysert så vel som “arkivfortelling”, en betegnelse introdusert i oppgaven som angår bokens bruk av dagbokutdrag, e-poster, avisutklipp og diverse for å fortelle sin historie. Joseph Franks begrep “spatial form” og Frank Kermodes “aevum” vil bli benyttet for å forklare romanens tidsuttrykk der forskjellige temporaliteter sameksisterer og integreres. Oppgaven avsluttes med å konkludere at Cronins eskatologiske historie og fragmenterte temporalitet best lar seg beskrive i Franks romlige kategorier.
