Abstract

Background: Patients admitted to hospital with acute and/or critical illness are at risk of developing a clinical deterioration. The function of a mobile intensive care nurse may contribute to earlier detection of symptoms of such worsening in hospital wards, and ensure that appropriate treatment can be started as soon as possible. Objective and problem: The aim of this master’s thesis is to prepare a proposal for a professional procedure that is knowledge-based and professionally based. By describing the recomended role and responsibility of a mobile intensive care nurse in a hospital setting, a professional procedure could contribute to increased health services quality and patient safety. Problem: Professional procedure proposal for the function and responsibility of a mobile intensive care nurse. Method: In the master’s thesis, quality work is employed as a method. The method used at the macro level is the Model for quality improvement developed by the the former Norwegian Research Center for Health Services. The method used at the micro level is the Norwegian Directorate of Health's guide for the development of knowledge-based guidelines. A PICO-form has been prepared to answer the health question and the search for knowledge is structured according to by the 5S pyramid model. The professional procedure is evaluated with the AGREE II tool. Results: The result of the master’s thesis is a proposal for a professional procedure for the role of a mobile intensive care nurse in a hospital. Conclusion: Using professional procedures can contribute to efficient and safe health services by reducing unwanted variation in the health care offered to the patient. Mobile intensive care nurse is a function recommended in the national patient safety program 24-7, for early detection of deterioration in the patient's condition in hospital wards.
