Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the experiences of health professionals with user participation in working with patients and relatives. In Norway, user participation is a statutory right. Kommunens sentralforbund and Folkehelseinstituttet cooperate to launch a campaign focusing on this, where health care professionals are encouraged to ask the patient '’what matters to you'’. The campaign is marked both national and international on an exact date, each year. We have chosen to write an empirical study in which the method used is qualitative. We conducted a focus group interview, in which the informants were three health professionals employed in nursing homes. This resulted in detailed and complementary descriptions of the health professionals' experiences. Four main findings have been identified in the study and these categories as segment: use of user participation, documentation, professional development and challenges in the section. The campaign helps the health workers to focus on user participation, but they also point out that user participation is something they focus on every day, all year. Nevertheless, the health professionals experience that it can arise challenges in patients and dependents user participation in different situations wich results in less co-determining in everyday life then what they are entitled to. The findings suggest that the operation of nursing homes, work-life routines, relatives and sense of responsibility among health professionals are challenges that make user participation difficult.
