Sosiale medier som protestkatalysator

Authors: Marcus Nicolai Hall;

Sosiale medier som protestkatalysator

Abstract

In some’s ideal world the ruling body of a society governs with the will of the people at heart. No matter whether one believes in this idea or not, it is hard not ta acknowledge that the general inhabitants of a society play a role in it. This text seeks to be an introduction to what happens when a populace become disgruntled with a decision, policy or the general state of affairs and choose to voice their opinion through peaceful protest. The main framework for this text will be social media, making the general theme of the text more of a social movement and protests in a modern context variant. One of the goals of the text also will be to show how social media can be used as a catalyst for an informational cascade and as a easy-to-use doorway into the world of social movements for even the most rational of individuals. To do this, well established theory will be applied to two chosen cases, Singapore 2013 and Korea 2008, of which varying elements have been highlighted to show how the chosen theory can fit in light of the texts main question. We conclude by finding that social media without a doubt has the possibility and looks to have already been used as a platform for engaging many people in protests, and also being a modern arena for organizing large scale social movements.
