Abstract

Sammendrag Hvilke mestringsstrategier benytter miljøhemmede seg av i møte med samfunnet omkring? Hvordan løser de problemer i mikrointeraksjon, hvordan løser de problemer i forhold til trygge fysiske rom, og hvordan løser de problemer med det offentlige og arbeidsgivere? Disse spørsmålene blir besvart gjennom kvalitativ analyse av informantintervjuer. Datamaterialet blir analysert og presentert innenfor et sosiologisk teoretisk rammeverk, med fortellende eksempler fra informanthistorier. Miljøhemming er et ikke-definert begrep i samfunnet, og det foreligger per i dag ingen konsensus om årsakssammenhenger mellom helseplager og miljø, eller om kroppslige årsaksmekanismer. Ikke desto mindre lever miljøhemmede med en omfattende funksjonshemming, og de må velge mellom mestringsstrategier som enten blottstiller et språkløst diffust stigma, gir sykdom, eller driver dem inn i ufrivillig isolasjon. Da miljøhemming ikke finnes som en akseptert virkelighet, får miljøhemmede sjeldent gjennomslag for sine «krav» om tilpasninger. Det foreligger et gap mellom samfunnets institusjonaliserte virkelighet, og de miljøhemmedes opplevde virkelighet. Med tiden opparbeides en slags «lidelseskompetanse», og isolasjon fremtrer gradvis som den mest attraktive strategien, til tross for at den fører til ensomhet.
