Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to explore use and views of research-based knowledge among field training officers (supervisors of practical training) in the Norwegian police force, and which factors that could influence their use of research. This will provide valuable insights into how to support research utilization among field training officers and thereby contribute to evidence-based practice within the police force. The study is designed as a quantitative cross-sectional study and is based on data collected through a web-based survey. The results are discussed in light of the theoretical concepts of information literacy and information culture. The findings suggest that the respondents read research, but infrequently. When comparing how useful different sources of knowledge are for professional practice, research is considered the least useful source of knowledge and professional experience the most useful source. However, research is considered useful for keeping up to date and for evaluating and adjusting professional practice. Known barriers and facilitators for research utilization influence the respondents to a certain extent. The most prominent organizational barrier appears to be lack of time for finding and reading research during working-hours. This might also constitute a barrier for the use of various library services.
