Fysisk aktivitet som en behandlingsmetode mot depresjon

Abstract

Bakgrunn: Depresjon er blant de vanligste og mest økene psykiske lidelsene i dagens samfunn. I følge verdens helseorganisasjon er depresjon den viktigste årsaken til sykdomsbelastning og tidlig død på verdensbasis. Opp mot halvparten av Norges befolkning vil i løpet av livet oppleve lettere psykiske lidelser. Det er derfor viktig med tidlig intervensjon og forebyggende tiltak. Problemstilling: I hvor stor grad kan fysisk aktivitet fungere som en behandlingsmetode mot depresjon? Metode: For å besvare problemstilling er oppgaven basert på litteraturstudie, de utvalgte studiene som er benyttet inneholder kvalitativ og kvantitativ forskning. Det ble gjennomført systematiske søk fra Januar 2018 til mars 2018. Resultat: Det tyder på at trening og fysisk aktivitet har gunstige effekter på depresjonssymptomer som er sammenlignbare med antidepressive behandlinger, og blir ansett som en akseptabel og gjennomførbar behandlingsmetode mot depresjon. Til forskjell fra medikamentell behandling krever dette behandlingsalternativet lite ressurser og har få bivirkninger. Studiene viser at fysisk aktivitet fungerer som en distraksjon bort fra andre tanker og følelser. Resultatene viser at deprimerte individer kan oppleve reduksjon i depresjonssymptomer og økt fysisk mestring ved å øke sitt aktivitetsnivå. Konklusjon: I lys av studiene og teorien som er anvendt i oppgaven konkluderes det med at fysisk aktivitet kan sammenlignes med antidepressive medikamenter, og er et godt behandlingsalternativ i lik grad som medikamenter.
