Formativ vurdering på 9.trinn. Om vurdering, motivasjon og mestring.

Abstract

English: This qualitative and empirical study is based on the research question: How does formative assessment increase the motivation and skill of 9th grade students? A prerequisite for optimal learning and development at school is that students are motivated for schoolwork (Kunnskapsdepartementet, 2010-2011). Therefore, motivating students is one of the schools’ and teachers’ tasks. In this process, it is important to establish the conditions that motivate students. Hence, it is also important that today’s teachers are well educated in motivation and what motivates students (Hopfenbeck, 2014). It can be questioned why some students begin doing their schoolwork immediately after coming home, while others procrastinate. This study concerns itself with three core concepts: Assessment, motivation and skill, with focus on their interaction and how the schools affect the students’ motivation and skill through formative assessment. As the study’s goal is to go in depth and analyse the students’ experience of themselves and their every-day life, the methods section will elaborate on a qualitative research method through interviews. The subjects are four students in 9th grade at a school in Eastern Norway. The results of this study show that outer motivation is the primary driver of today’s 9th grade students, and the recommendation of this research is therefore that schools should focus more on enhancing the students’ inner motivation.
