Genetisk mangfold i Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato

Abstract

Bakgrunn: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato er en samlebetegnelse for flere Borrelia- varianter som forårsaker borreliose. Tre av de humanpatogene variantene; Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia afzelii og Borrelia garinii, er vanlige i Europa. Human Borreliose er en kompleks sykdom og de ulike Borrelia-artene kan gi ulike symptomer. Materialer og metoder: Artikkelen er basert på søk i PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/pubmed/) og de globale MLST databasene (http://www.mlst.net/ og http://pubmlst.org/). Søkeord som ble brukt; «MLST, Borrelia, Genetics, Host, Taxonomy, Evolution, Lyme». Av artiklene som er bruk har de fleste forfatterne tilhørighet til de store fagmiljø- ene som jobber med Borrelia-MLST på verdensbasis. Diskusjon: Borrelia-taksonomi er stadig i utvikling og multilokus sekvenstyping (MLST) er en av metodene som brukes til genetisk karakterisering av Borrelia. MLST er et analyseverktøy som gir resultater som er sammenlignbare med resultater fra hele verden via en online database (borrelia.mlst.net). Metoden bygger på et sett strenge kriterier som må oppfylles for at MLST skal kunne anvendes til taksonomi og evolusjonsstudier. MLST har påvist et stort mangfold blant Borrelia-stammer. Forskning indikerer at det store genetiske mangfoldet blant Borrelia-stammer kan kobles til determinanter som vertsdyr og geografisk tilknytting.
