Abstract

English: The issue of this master’s thesis is «How do teachers cooperate with parents to prevent and handle behavioural problems among students in elementary school?». It explains how four teachers collaborate with parents combining prevention and handling children behavioural problems in elementary school and their experiences related to this. To answer the issue, it was undertaken an empirical study in the form of a qualitative research interview of four informants at two different schools in two different municipalities. The thesis discusses the results of the empirical material through a theoretical framework. In my analysis, it appears that the informants are concerned that good cooperation contributes to a positive development of the student, both professionally and socially, as well as for their well-being. In addition, they are committed to promoting good cooperation that can help prevent and handle behavioural problems. In terms of preventing behavioural problems, the informants emphasize positive contact, the teacher initiates the cooperation, and they look positively on parental contribution in the collaboration. They both encourage and support the parents in different ways. In addition, they emphasize that it is the student's learning and development which is the goal of the collaboration and they find the support of the school management important to succeed. They also emphasize that the student's upbringing and thus social development is a shared responsibility between home and school, but it is unclear whether social skills development is considered as an important preventive strategy. However, the material suggests that there is more work on social skills development in the lower primary level (1st-4th grade) than in the upper primary level (5th -7th grade). The same things apply to handling behavioural problems, but in this connection, the informants are also concerned with frequent contact and they tend to make arrangements with the home. These agreements relate both to the contact between home and school, as well as to strategies and measures taken to address behavioural problems. In addition, the informants show comprehensive empathy and understanding of the parents’ situation. The material may also indicate that parental guidance is little used as measures to handle behavioural problems in the informants' local environment.
